CAPLE levels
The CAPLE (Centre for Evaluation of Portuguese as a Foreign Language) uses European Portuguese as its base.
The Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFRL, CEF, or CEFR) guides CAPLE. It means it covers all the language levels from A1 through C2.
The certificate is valid for life and never expires.
There are six CAPLE diplomas, each one corresponding to a particular skill level (A1 to C2).

Eligibility and age limit
- The standard option is available to candidates 16 and older.
- For A1 to B2 (ACESSO, CIPLE, DEPLE, and DIPLE), there is also a school version meant for those aged 12-15.
- The TEJO test is also available for children aged 9 to 11.
The test is open to anyone who doesn’t speak Portuguese as their mother tongue. Also, your parents’ first language must not be Portuguese.
To be eligible, it is required that you have not studied in Portuguese during your primary and secondary education.
CAPLE test centers across the world
As of September 2025, there are over 100 certified test centers across 35 countries. They conduct the test in cooperation with different educational institutions.
If you plan to take the CAPLE, the first step is to find an LAPE center that may hold the exam. The LAPE stands for the Location of Applications and Promotion of the exams.

Examination dates
CAPLE testing takes place in May, July, and November. Besides, they also host tests in Lisbon during February, March, August, September, and October.

Test formats of CAPLE

CAPLE in India
The Camões Institute offers the CAPLE test in Delhi and Goa. You can take any level in Delhi, but only a few tests are available at the Goa center.

2. CELPE-Bras (Brazilian Portuguese Proficiency Test)
The CELPE-Brás (Certificado de Proficiência em Língua Portuguesa para Estrangeiros) is another popular Portuguese test.

Unlike the European CAPLE, CELPE-Brás only checks ability in Brazilian Portuguese. If you aim for higher education, work, or apply for citizenship in Brazil, you need to take CELPE-Brás.
It is gaining popularity worldwide among Portuguese learners. It stands out because it is a large-scale proficiency test with a unique design.
CELPE-B levels
The CELPE-Brás is a single test with four different levels. It is like the French TEF and TCF, and the Spanish SIELE.
Everyone takes the same test, which is mostly about communication. Your performance will decide your grade and certificate.
You can get one of these four grades:
- Intermediate (Intermediário) — You can get anywhere from 2 to 2.75 points. The results imply the speaker is an intermediate-level speaker of Brazilian Portuguese.
- Upper-intermediate (Intermediário superior) — You score between 2.76 and 3.5 points. You’re able to speak effectively in most day-to-day situations.
- Advanced (Avançado) — You get between 3.51 and 4.25 points and establish a fluent speaker.
- Higher Advanced (Avançado superior) — You could score between 4.26 and 5 points. This is like the CEFR C2 level, reflecting a fluency that is almost at the native speaker’s level.
You must retake the test if your score is below 2/5.
Test Structure and format
CELPE-Brás has four sections: reading, writing, listening, and oral interaction. You can take both written and oral exams in person only.
The written test lasts for 3 hours. It combines reading and listening with written production. It focuses on listening, reading, and writing.
The tasks involve watching a video, summarizing, reading an article, writing an email, listening to an interview, and answering questions.
The second one is a 20-minute face-to-face oral speaking test. It uses a conversational interview based on a photo, theme, or short text. It uses dialogues, which are audio recordings.

You will need to score equally well on both parts of the exam to get to a higher level. If you get a better score on either the oral or written test, your certificate will be based on your lowest mark.

Most testing centers are in Latin America, but you can find some exam centers on every continent.
The CELP-Brás is an excellent option for learners. The limited test dates and centers outside Brazil are a disadvantage. It doesn’t cover European or African Portuguese.
Dates and how to register for CELPE-Brás?
CELPE-Brás happens twice a year, typically in April and October. You can ask the test center closest to you about the dates, since they can differ.
This exam’s registration period begins two months before the exam. As an example, the application for the April test is due in early February.

3. Telc Português B1

Structure of the Telc exam
Test takers are given tasks to check various skills in the test. It covers questions like matching text or multiple-choice questions in the reading, listening, and language sections.
Writing and speaking tasks confirm your productive writing and speaking abilities. Test takers provide written or spoken answers to prompts, such as questions or images.

The written test lasts 150 minutes. You get 90 minutes for the reading and the language section (grammar and vocabulary). You will also get 30 minutes each for listening and writing.
